Introducing the Plex Media Player
Plex Media Player has powerful live search capabilities that allow you to quickly find that movie, show, or song you are looking for. Plex also provides helpful suggestions when you don’t know what you want. Gives you both a beautiful HTPC experience and a smooth desktop media player experience. Whether you are home or away, you can easily play any file type with the world’s most potent playback engine. It’s the ultimate media player!
We’re incredibly proud to be taking the wraps off the future of premium media consumption in Plex. We’ve had a crack team working for the better part of a year on an app we’ve built from the ground up to deliver the absolute highest quality media browsing and playback experience.
It represents an exciting new direction for us in lots of ways, and we call it the Plex Media Player. Because, well, it plays media. (Full disclosure: we ran Most Best Great Media Player Ever >9000 v3.11 for Media past marketing and they didn’t bite.)
Connect your Plex account
Don’t feel like reading all about it and just want to DOWNLOAD ALL THE ONES AND ZEROS? Be our guests. The Plex Pass preview of the app is available today for download (sign in to your Plex Pass-enabled account and choose the “Plex Pass Downloads” button). Let us know what you think in the new forum, or read all about it here. It’ll be free for everyone after the preview period.
Media software Plex launches a new desktop app for Mac and Windows
Plex today is launching a new desktop application for Mac and Windows, to eventually replace the Plex Media Player as the company’s only desktop solution. The app’s arrival also signals a change in direction for the company, which will also now remove its existing Windows Store application and end support for the traditional home theatre PC setup — the latter which involves a desktop computer connected to a TV or home theatre.
Support for all file types (well, virtually all), including hi-fi music and video formats.
Stream all of your media to all your devices, anytime, anywhere, with the same beautiful experience on all of them. (iOS, Android, and Windows apps require a one-time unlock fee for full playback if you do not have a Plex Pass.)
Organize all of your media–videos, photos, and music–and make it beautiful with artwork and info like plot summaries, bios, and more.

How to install
I now wish to install a Plex Media PLAYER on my desktop PC. Also, I plan to advise some family members on installing a PLEX Media PLAYER on their PCs (in remote locations). I plan to provide them with access to my streaming programs.
How do I install a PLEX Media PLAYER on my desktop PC? I go to the PLEX website and follow my nose to what would seem to be a button to download a PLEX Media Player. Still, the app that is subsequently installed on my desktop PC looks identical to the PLEX Media SERVER on my Media Server PC. It seems to have all the functionality of a full-fledged Plex Media Server when I want its functionality to be limited to what my TV PLEX Players and my iPad PLEX Players allow me to do.
This is of concern to me because it I point my family members to the wrong app, they might foul up my PLEX installation.
